Jaye Early
Jaye Early is a Darug man from the Boorooberongal clan, an artist, and Lecturer at UNSW Art & Design. Working across video and painting, Early’s practice -led research is primarily autobiographical, transforming personal dislocations into strategies of self-disclosure. Early’s practice explores the tensions between public and private spheres and draws on Foucauldian theories of the self, self-design, contemporary confessional discourse, subjectivity, and settler-colonial theory. Over the past 15 years, Early has exhibited nationally and internationally. His work is held in public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and Victoria University. He has been a finalist in numerous awards, including the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize (2013, 2021), Archibald Prize (2021), Lester Art Prize (2021), Lethbridge Small Scale Art Award (2020), Linden Art Prize (2019), Sir John Sulman Prize (2018), Redland Art Award (2016, 2018), Hornsby Art Prize (2016), Darebin Art Prize (2017), Koorie Art Show (2016), Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize (2016), and Victorian Indigenous Art Awards (2013).
