Our Model

We are working to change the way in which knowledge is produced, validated, and shared within member-based Research Networks.

Intellectual Excellence

Review scores are based on a clearly articulated rubric, and the result is a peer-review process that is scrupulously fair in its assessments, while at the same time offering carefully structured and constructive feedback that enhances the quality of the published article. Each year a top-ranked article from the Design Principles & Practices Journal Collection receives the International Award for Excellence.

Wide Reach

We are committed to expanding the visibility, reach, and impact of research from the Design Principles & Practices Research Network. Journals in the Design Principles & Practices Journal Collection can be found in numerous databases, accessible via the libraries of institutional subscribers, and in the CG Scholar Bookstore for current Research Network Members.

Participatory Process

We take seriously the “peer” of “peer review.” Decisions of what is published come from reviewers that are Members of the Research Network ensuring the knowledge is validated in horizontal social knowledge relations.

Inclusive

A publishing process that is without prejudice to institutional affiliation, stage in career, national origins, or disciplinary perspectives. If the article is excellent, and has been systematically and independently assessed as such, it will be published.

Accessibility

Authors and reviewers, as Research Network members, gain subscriber access to the journal collection, ensuring that the product of their labor is also accessible to them.

Hybrid Open Access

We fully support the general principles of open and accessible research and seek to work collaboratively with all stakeholders in this time of disruptive change. We offer a variety of Open Access options to make your research accessible and make accessibility affordable. Please see our Open Research page for available options.

Collection Titles

The Design Principles & Practices Journal Collection offers an interdisciplinary forum to explore the meaning and purpose of design. In professional and disciplinary terms, the network traverses a broad sweep to construct a trans-disciplinary dialogue, which encompasses a wide array of design paradigms and practices. We move between theoretical reflection on the nature of design and case studies of design practice, and from research-based perspectives to the experience-based perspectives of design insiders. We seek to build an epistemic community to make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries. The journal collection is defined by our Research Network scope and concerns and motivated to build strategies for action framed by our shared themes and tensions.

The Process

1 Submit an Article

To begin the process, complete our Journal Article Submission Form. This will provide our staff with contact details for the authors, and details about the article submission, such as title, abstract, keywords, etc. After submitting the form, you will receive instructions for providing your complete article submission. Please read our Article Requirements and ensure your article is ready to submit. Submitted articles are inspected to ensure these requirements are satisfied. After passing initial checks, your article will move into peer review.

2 Gather Feedback

The peer review process is dependent on each person who submits an article for peer review to also participate in the review of other articles. Authors of article submissions which have qualified to enter the peer review process also qualify to be selected as reviewers for other articles currently in peer review. More information about the peer review process is listed under our Peer Review Policies page. Each article is assigned to two reviewers with editorial experience and/or relevant expertise. After your article is reviewed, you will receive the reviewers’ feedback and a publication decision.

3 Publish Your Work

Once your article has passed peer review, we will help you through the final steps toward publication, such as membership confirmation, the publishing agreement, and copy editing. Please note, while you do not need to be a Research Network Member to submit an article for consideration or to have an article peer reviewed, you must become a Research Network Member to receive a Publishing Agreement and have the article published.
