Judith Martínez Estrada
Judith Martínez Estrada is a Lecturer and Graphics Discipline Lead at UNSW Art & Design, and a practice-led artist and designer working across Australia, Spain and the UK. Her research examines trans-generational memory and archival inquiry, using photography, printmaking, graphic design and site-specific installation to build counter-archives that recover the biographies of those pushed to history's periphery. Her recent work focuses on the Spanish Civil War and the Francoist dictatorship: The Children of the War traces the 1937 evacuation of Basque child refugees, and The Memory Threshold responds to the mass graves at the Paterna cemetery in Valencia. Both projects return visibility to silenced histories through community consultation and creative practice and speak directly to questions of societal impact and ethical engagement with difficult pasts. She is interested in how visual narratives and storytelling can extend this inquiry to other trauma-based histories, and in developing new approaches to archival aesthetics and function.
