A background in design, education, and research has been developed with a focus on the intersection of visual culture, inclusive education, and speculative design. The project Under My Skin explores concepts of otherness through visual storytelling and self-reflection. Particular attention is given to the ways in which images can hold space for complex identities and lived experiences.
In 2013, the documentary Madly Gifted—centered on the relationship between bipolar disorder and creative temperament—was directed and produced. The film has been widely screened and remains publicly accessible at madlygifted.com, where it continues to contribute to conversations surrounding neurodivergence and artistic expression.
Design has been taught since 2005 in both the United States and the Dominican Republic, across pre-college, undergraduate, and continuing education settings. The teaching philosophy is grounded in brain-based learning strategies and student-centered pedagogy. Over time, research interests have expanded to include design theory, virtual and intensive learning formats, language justice, and the role of emerging technologies in creating more inclusive and equitable educational environments.
Currently, part-time teaching is conducted at Parsons School of Design, with courses focused on design theory and practice viewed through the lens of visual culture. In 2017, the book Second Language Through Design[ing] was published, advocating for inclusive, DEI-informed teaching strategies rooted in language justice, particularly in support of BIPOC learners. Subsequently, a pedagogical model titled Sprint-to-Pacing was developed to support intensive learning environments. This model now informs ongoing PhD research at RMIT University.
As a practice-based PhD candidate, investigations are centered on the design of sustainable, multisensory learning environments that support both neurodivergent and neurotypical learners. This research integrates spatial design, speculative methodologies, and emerging technologies to reimagine inclusive educational spaces—particularly for those often underrepresented in traditional models.
Between 2021 and 2023, the role of Design Director was held at Dauphin Americas, where leadership was provided for design services and marketing, along with brand realignment efforts centered on sustainability and workplace wellbeing. Presently, Gigi Polo Lab is operated as a collaborative design studio, working with mission-driven clients focused on inclusion, wellness, and the future of design.
The themes of this conference align closely with ongoing academic and creative work, particularly in relation to how visual culture can challenge and expand traditional understandings of learning, identity, and access. Participation in this community of inquiry is viewed as a meaningful opportunity to contribute to broader conversations around neurodiverse futures in education.
