“Is there a tradition in Latin design research? Ten years of scientific networking between Europe and Latin America”
Elena Formia is Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture of the Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, where she is Director of the First Cycle Degree in Industrial Design and the Second Cycle Degree in Advanced Design. Her main research topics are advanced design and future-focused processes, design education and the relationship between design sciences and humanistic knowledge.
Since 2014, she is member of the Advanced Design Unit (ADU), Department of Architecture (Università di Bologna), a research group that investigates the relationships between design cultures, innovation and anticipation through a cross-disciplinary approach. ADU’s main topics of investigation are Citizen Sciences and practices for social innovation; Design and communication for systemic and responsible innovation; Design innovation in collective learning systems and Human Body Design in transformative economy.
From 2015 to 2018, she was full-time Senior Assistant Professor (RTD-B) at the Department of Architecture (Università di Bologna); then, Associate Professor in the same Department.
Since 2016, she is member of the Scientific Board of the PhD in Architecture and Design Cultures of the Department of Architecture (Università di Bologna).
From 2012 to 2014 she worked as Research Fellow of the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano.
Previously (2008-2012) she hold a Post-Doctorate Fellowship at the Politecnico di Torino, Architectural and Industrial Design Department, where she collaborated at the foundation of the Latin Network for the Development of Design Processes. Also thanks to this experience, she has developed a deep interest in investigating new models and practices of design education, a research field that has been constantly nurtured in the following years till the organization of the international symposium “FutureDesignEd. Innovation in Design Education - Innovation in Education by Design” (2017 and 2020).
She has taught Design Cultures at the Bachelor and Master Design Degree Courses in Design of the University of Bologna, Politecnico di Milano and Università degli Studi della Repubblica di San Marino. She hold workshops and seminars in international universities such as TEC Monterrey, Campus Guadalajara, Mexico (2014).
