Visa Information

To enter Russia, most foreign nationals* are required to obtain a visa in advance.

To enter Russia, most non-Russian citizens* have to possess a valid passport (expiring on or after October 1, 2019) and a valid Russian entry visa issued by a local Russian Embassy or Consulate.

It is not possible to obtain an entry visa upon arrival, so travelers must apply for their visas well in advance. Travelers who arrive in Russia without an entry visa will not be permitted to enter the country and will face immediate return to their country of origin at their own expense.

Steps to Obtain a Visa for Entry into Russia:

1. Obtain an Official Visa Invitation

Before applying, you must get an official "visa invitation" (also known as a "letter of invitation," "visa sponsor," or “visa support letter"). The visa invitation is a document that allows you to obtain a visa to Russia according to the purpose and duration of your visit. Please note that the visa invitation letter cannot be used in place of a visa. As the hosting university, St Petersburg University will provide a visa invitation for all 2019 conference participants who require it.

St Petersburg University visa invitations allow delegates to obtain a Single Entry Humanitarian Visa. According to Russian law, foreign citizens taking part in science conferences and similar events (giving presentations, being regarded as experts, pursuing publication, etc.) must obtain a Humanitarian Visa (not a Tourist Visa). If a family member, partner, or child is also traveling, it is recommended they obtain a Tourist Visa.

Please be aware that issuing visa invitations is a time consuming process and we recommend you apply for a visa invitation at least 3 months prior to the conference start date or earlier.

2. Fill out the Electronic Visa Application Form

Purpose of visit (section): select "Science-Culture-Sports-Religion"
Purpose of visit: select "Cultural Relations"
Visa category and type: select "Common Humanitarian"

Note: your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months past the date of your departure from Russia and must have at least two adjacent blank pages to accommodate the visa.

3. Submit Your Documents

Submit the visa invitation, the application form, your passport, a passport-size photograph, and the processing fee (money order or certified bank check only) to the Russian Embassy. Applications are accepted approximately 30 to 60 days before departure. There are three options for filing your application: deliver it to one of the consulates in-person ($33 fee); mail it to a consulate ($118 fee); or submit your application through a third-party service ($33 in-person fee, plus the agency's service fee). Note: these fees are subject to change and may vary depending on the country from which you are submitting your application.
